  • Profile

Marc W. Heerdink is an Assistant Professor in the Social Psychology department of the University of Amsterdam, and part of Emotions As Social Information lab (EASI lab).

He is also track ambassador for the Social Influence Master's track.

    Research Interests

Marc's research focuses on understanding the interplay between emotional behavior and group dynamics. The majority of his research is concerned with affective processes within and between groups. For instance, several lines of research investigate how emotional influence shapes processes of convergence (e.g., conformity, norm transmission) and divergence (dissent, arguing) in groups. Another line of research concerns how affective processes shape group performance. Other current research interests include the development and consequences of group hierarchy, and emotional processes in immoral behavior. He combines traditional social-psychological methods with computational methods to advance the understanding of intra- and inter-group processes online and offline.

    Academic background

    • B.Sc. (2008) and M.Sc. (2010) in Social Psychology from the University of Amsterdam, Erasmus research internship in Dr. Luis Oceja's Lab at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
    • Ph.D. (2015) from the University of Amsterdam, on a dissertation that focuses on the function and consequences of emotional reactions to deviance in small working groups and is titled Regulating Deviance with Emotions: Emotional Expressions as Signals of Acceptance and Rejection (University of Amsterdam).
    • Postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. Gerben van Kleef (University of Amsterdam)
    • NWO Rubicon postdoctoral fellowship in Prof. Miles Hewstone's Oxford Centre for the Study of Intergroup Conflict (OxCSIC, University of Oxford).
