Thabyay: Creative Resistance in Myanmar (2025) follows four democracy revolutionaries who are finding creative means to fight against the military junta. Some take up arms while struggling to stay true to their commitment to non-violence, while others engage in “artivism,” using music, poetry and art to bring about a peaceful, free, democratic and truly inclusive future for all people in Myanmar.

The film will be introduced by Myanmar expert Maaike Matelski (VU). Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Thet Swe Win – one of the protagonists in the film and awardee of the Dutch Foreign Ministry’s Human Rights Tulip Award – film producer Gregg Butensky, and Pyae Phyo Kyaw from the Netherlands-Myanmar Solidarity Platform. The event is moderated by Yatun Sastramidjaja (UvA).

Admission is free but registration is required.

Hosted by the Moving Matters program group (part of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) and the Amsterdam Centre for Conflict Studies (ACCS), in collaboration with the Netherlands-Myanmar Solidarity Platform.
